This page will record memories of Fr. Donald sent to his executors from his many friends from across the UK and around the world. Return to the main page.
God rest his soul. Thank you so much for emailing me. I've known Donald (and Gladys) for nearly 40 years!! I remember Donald and Gladys with much affection and I will say mass for him next Tuesday here in New Zealand - a place which was on Donald's wish list of places to visit.
I remember his many visits to his sister in law Irene who lived next door to us. I remember one such visit during very hot weather when I commiserated with him for wearing such clothing in the heat but he responded by saying that it wasn't too bad as he didn't wear anything underneath! A lovely man.
His memory is deeply cherished at St Hilda's, Cross Green, where he covered two interregnums (almost the same one, but not technically!) totalling two and a half years. He paved the way for the eventual and much-needed realignment...
He was a member of the Friends of Opera North for many years, he was the most wonderful of old gentleman (in the true sense of that much mis-used word), delightful company and a great supporter of Opera North. I always enjoyed our correspondence, and his appreciation of my work for the Friends was a joy to me. I have such fond and grateful memories of Fr Donald.
Fr Donald will be greatly missed - he has given much to His Lord and to the Catholic Movement in the CoE. Ann, my wife, and I am in New Zealand at the moment; we shall remember Fr Donald in our prayers and hopefully at a requiem mass if I can find the means to offer one.
I used to live in Leeds and my garden backed on to Donald and Gladys's, we had many long chats over the fence and their dog would be included! At times he would offer advice if I was confused over things, the main time that springs to mind was when a friend was killed in a road traffic accident. I am sure he never knew just how reassuring it was to have them (and then just Donald) as neighbours, as they always made it perfectly clear I could call on them at any time for help and living alone this was much appreciated.
I know he missed Gladys dreadfully after her death and in letters to me after I left Leeds and moved to Leicester with work he would mention her and say that God was not ready for him yet. But now he is.
Donald was an amazing man with so many talents I know how much he will be missed by so many people.
I have fond memories of conversations with Fr Membery on various occasions when we met at "do's". This was particularly the case when he was "unofficial" chaplain to Bishop John and what seemed their frequent visits to St James the Great, Darlington! He was a lovely man and our constituency will be the poorer without him.
"In paradisum deducant te angeli: In tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres, Et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem."
